Project “Codename FOOD”

Here’s the FOOD manifesto by George Prowse (cokehabit)

Currently in the computer world we have a community that is based around the idea that software should be free from restrictions and that the user should be able to copy, study, modify and redistribute without restriction. To many this idea has become a way of life because of their necessary interactions on a day-to-day basis. Many people find that while taking from the freedom that are allowed they are restricted by their own limitations on how to fully repay the community in a way that they feel is sufficient. Until now almost 100% of the help that is given back to the community has been in the way of various coding for either individual projects or for groups of them (like a Linux distribution) but there is a huge untapped resource of people who can offer various other skills or even just their time but have no way to do it or haven’t thought about it because the situation has never arisen.

The aim of this project is to connect those who can offer with those who need. It was shown that when I had the idea originally we gathered a huge amount of support in a very short amount of time, far more than the forum thread that it was posted on to begin with. It was suggested that this should be made a free-software-wide project rather than limiting it to the forum of the distribution I had originally posted it on. Luckily I have a very talented and kind group who were willing to help and offer (most of the time better) suggestions as to how the project could and should go ahead.

This project hopes to keep to the ideals of the community where it was based and started from and just like the idea of being able to sell free software we will leave it up to the individual’s conscience whether he wishes to work a project that is not or may become “non-free” but the base rule of this project is that “any help given has to be given free and without restrictions”.

This is a project with limitless potential and has the ability to become one of the biggest contributors to the open source movement. Join the potential!
